It is not an oversight and it is not cost-cutting. The tabletop drops about fourteen inches onto the bench rests and the backrests go on top of it. Anything moulded into it, or screwed to it, is in the way of that.

This is a 5.2-inch moulded base that stands on the table and lifts off in one second, which is the only requirement a convertible dinette actually has.

The reason is published, and it is mechanical.

On the Jayco owners’ forum, a member asking about insetting cup holders in his dinette table stopped himself for one specific reason: “these might interfere with the lowering of the table (Hit the support bar).” He was right, and every manufacturer’s own spec sheet says why.

—What the aisle asks of a table with two jobs

Every fix is fastened to the thing that has to move.

  • The screw-on holders go through the top

    Camco’s ships with four screws and holds up to 3.5 inches. JR Products’ folds flat to four inches square when not in use — which tells you it expects to stay fastened there permanently.

  • The vacuum mounts need a surface a trailer rarely has

    SeaSucker’s vertical holder wants “most non-porous, vertical surfaces” and a 4-1/2 inch cup. Textured wall board and grained laminate are not that.

  • The table with holders built in is a different table

    Detmar’s removable kit has four moulded holders — 2-3/4 inches across and three quarters of an inch deep. That is a dish, not a well, and it replaces your tabletop to get it.

  • And the table is only 38 by 30 inches to begin with

    RecPro publishes the dinette tabletop at 38 wide by 30 deep, weighing 11.5 pounds. Four people eat off that. There is not a lot of it to give away to hardware.

—Does it actually work

It wobbles. Then it settles.

A kid slides into the booth and the bench takes the knock. The base is 5.2 inches across and spreads the load instead of balancing on a point, so the drink comes back level.

—How it holds

Width, and nothing else.

The base

5.2 inches across and fixed. It moves the edge the drink would have to tip over much further out, so the whole thing has to lean much further before it goes.

The fins

Six of them, holding the bottom inch. Cans and bottles slide on from the top; tumblers and glasses drop in. Drink and base then rock as one piece.

The laminate

A wide foot spreads the weight across the tabletop rather than pressing into it at a point, and the TPU is grippy against it. It marks nothing and lifts clean.

No screws through the tabletop, no vacuum cup, no bracket under the edge and no replacement table. It stands on the surface, and when the table has to come down it goes in the drawer with the salt and the cards.

—What seats and what does not

Deeper than a moulded table dish, and wider than a factory well.

The four holders moulded into Detmar’s table kit are 2-3/4 inches across and three quarters of an inch deep. This is 2.8 inches tall with six fins gripping the bottom inch of the container. A standard 12 oz can is 2.6 inches at the base; a 40 oz Stanley Quencher is 3.1 and seats snug. A handled mug does not seat at all — the handle lands exactly where the fins grip.

Straight answers.

Do I have to take it off to make the bed?

Yes. That is not a workaround, it is the design — anything fastened to that tabletop is in the way of the backrests. It is one second per unit and they nest in a drawer.

Can I use it while we’re towing?

No. It has no fastener of any kind, so it is for a trailer that is parked and levelled. Everything loose gets stowed before you hitch up.

Will it stand on a wood-grain laminate dinette?

Yes. Laminate is flat and level, which is all it needs, and the TPU is grippy against it. It marks nothing and lifts clean.

What about outside on the picnic table?

That is where a lot of them end up. Rough sawn timber, a folding table, a cooler lid — all fine. Water does not hurt it. What it will not do is resist wind on an empty can.

Will it hold a 40 oz Stanley?

Yes. The Quencher H2.0 40 oz is about 3.1 inches at the base, inside the range the fins flex to. Snug rather than drop-in — it seats with a push.

Why not just screw the $3.77 one to the table?

You can, and if the corner you pick is clear of the backrests it will work fine for years. It is four screws through the surface you eat off, in a trailer you will probably sell. That is the whole trade.

How much room do they take in storage?

They are 2.8 inches tall and about 3.6 ounces each, and they nest. Four of them take less drawer space than a box of pasta.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

Yes. Shore 85A TPU, 100% BPA free. Rinse it, wipe it, or run it through the dishwasher.

It is, and the Camco is $3.77. You are paying about eleven dollars to keep the tabletop intact and to have the thing work on the picnic table as well. Ninety days covers being wrong about that.

Having to move it every night sounds annoying.

It is the same motion as clearing the plates, and it is only the nights you actually make the bed up. If your dinette never converts, you have a fixed table — screw something to it and ignore this page.

My trailer has cup holders already.

Some do, usually one pair by the sofa or moulded into a table you can buy. The question is whether they are at the dinette, where four people are actually sitting.

Will it survive a winter in storage?

Shore 85A TPU, no moving parts, no hinge, no metal to corrode. Long-term UV exposure is not something we have tested, so we do not make a claim about it.
